Formula Drift Season is over and done with :(
You can't help but look back on the past couple months or I guess more like 6 months and think, "Wow a lot has happened." After taking the chance and flying to Las Vegas for FD round 4 I found myself loving it more and more. FD round 5 proved to be extremely worth while as I was brought onto the FD team as official track staff. No one can say that hardwork didn't pay off because it does and as the events came along, I worked harder. FD round 6 in Sonoma proved to be even more awesome than Seattle and Vegas as this was my first event as a full on FD employee. FD round 7, even more awesome than round 6 as I continued to make more and more friends within the ranks of drivers, mechanics, FD employee's and such.
I was also given the chance to ride with a pro and the winner of the 2008 Formula Drift series, Tanner Foust. Words cannot describe the feeling that overcame me as we were sideways through the entire 5/8th's turn, sliding past Dai as he had previously hit the wall and going into the horseshoe at 60+ mph. There is a reason why they're pro's and there is a reason why Tanner won. It was the best thing I had seen/experienced all year at that point. But wait.....the season....its not done yet??
The Red Bull World Drifting Championships has arrived in the middle of November. Wow it just cannot get any better. 16 of our best against 16 of the best drifters from around the world. Amazing enough was Mad Mike's FD 4 rotor...yes 4 rotor. Pure insanity right there ladies and gentlemen. The car sounded like something off of the Formula 1 race circuit and the dish on the rear wheels...well you could eat a 4 course meal off of it :) This was also the west coast Pro-Am competition where the top 8 drivers would receive their Formula Drift licenses for the 2009 season. I must say that there were some intense and wild wrecks in the beginning of the competition and in a way, weeding out the inexperience and making way for the drivers that would deserve the right of competing in Formula Drift.
The competition was heated during the Red Bull WDC as everyone from around the world battled towards that spot high up on the mountain of greatness. One driver after another though was knocked off the list as the qualifying and the tandems progressed throughout the afternoon and into the evening. As the sun set on the final day, one man stood high on the number one spot of the podium. Red Bull's own Reese Millen driving the Pontiac Solstice Red Bull car. Fitting enough and definately he deserved it. His driving that day and the previous was flawless and no one could touch him. As the day wasted away after the champion was crowned, the party had just begun as the Drift Alliance crew partied at their watering hole.
Sleep was not had as I made my way to my seat on the plane home to Montana. Thinking to myself, these people must be looking at me with shame as was tore up from the previous days events and the night times festivities. But they wouldn't know the feeling of watching the most experienced drifters from around the world, compete for the title of the best.
Will there be a Red Bull WDC next year? We wont know until we cross that bridge but I can assure you that I will most definately update this site with what is going on at every event starting in April. Formula Drift round 1 on the streets of Long Beach! We'll see you there and until then, take care, eat your greens, and I love ya!
Peace!
